When an ambitious graduate filmmaker returns to Miami to document the city’s underworld, his thesis film becomes an unexpected reckoning with the estranged father whose absence shaped his life.
What begins as a graduate thesis film about Miami’s underworld becomes an unexpected reckoning between a son and the dad he never had.
When filmmaker AeRiel Capo turns his camera on his estranged father, Joey, he expects to document a world of crime and chaos. Instead, he is pulled deeper into Joey’s life, forcing him to confront the man whose absence shaped his childhood and the painful legacy that still binds them together.
As observer and subject become father and son again, the film transforms into an intimate examination of addiction, incarceration, regret, and forgiveness. A pivotal call from Joey in jail awakens a newfound goal that sends AeRiel Capo to the Big Apple, before ultimately bringing him back to Los Angeles, where the journey comes full circle as he earns his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.
Greater Later (A Cracked Smile) is a deeply personal portrait of a fractured family confronting generational consequences—and the possibility that even after years of absence, redemption and ascension may still be possible.

Miami—the Magic City—has always represented contradiction to me. It is a place of beauty and brutality, promise and promiscuity, culture and chaos. It is the city that raised me, the city that shaped my understanding of survival, ambition, and identity, and no matter how complicated that relationship may be, it will always be home.
At its core, Greater Later (A Cracked Smile) is about my father and me.
Growing up in a poverty-stricken, single-parent household while my father struggled with addiction and incarceration left a lasting impact on my life. His absence created wounds, questions, and circumstances I was forced to navigate long before I fully understood them. At the same time, my mother became a constant source of strength, showing me that the circumstances surrounding my life did not have to become the limits of it.
Making this film became more than an academic pursuit or my first feature-length documentary. It became a confrontation with my past, an attempt to understand my father beyond his mistakes, and a search for meaning inside the experiences that shaped us both.
Through this journey, I came to believe that even the most turbulent life can hold value when its truth is told honestly. My hope is that this film gives my father, myself, and others who have lived through similar circumstances a sense of dignity, possibility, and purpose.
Greater Later is ultimately about what we inherit, what we endure, and what we choose to become.
AeRiel “Capo” Ventrano is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker, producer, actor, musician, and multidisciplinary artist whose work is shaped by an unconventional journey from Miami to the California Institute of the Arts.
Raised in Miami, AeRiel developed an early determination to transcend the circumstances around him through education, athletics, and creative expression. While attending Alabama State University, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science while competing as a three-sport collegiate athlete—experiences that strengthened the discipline, versatility, and perseverance that continue to define his artistic approach.
While completing his undergraduate degree, AeRiel discovered another calling. After landing several lead roles, AeRiel took an unexpected leap—auditioning for graduate acting programs while completing his degree. That decision earned him a scholarship to the prestigious California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he pursued his Master of Fine Arts in Acting and Filmmaking and expanded his artistic voice across performance, directing, writing, editing, music, and visual storytelling.
His first feature-length documentary, Greater Later (A Cracked Smile), represents the convergence of those disciplines. AeRiel served as the film’s director, producer, editor, on-screen subject, and creator of its original soundtrack, transforming an intensely personal story into a cinematic examination of family, identity, generational consequences, and ascension.
Through Greater Later Operations LLC, AeRiel creates bold, deeply personal work rooted in lived experience. Rather than romanticizing struggle, his storytelling confronts it—revealing the humanity behind difficult realities and exploring what becomes possible when individuals refuse to be defined by where they began.
